If you’re bringing a phone from abroad to Pakistan, whether you’re a Pakistani citizen living overseas or an international traveler, it’s important to understand the PTA tax. However, recent changes to the PTA tax policy mean that you can use your phone tax-free if your stay is less than 120 days. If you stay longer, you’ll need to register your phone to continue using local networks, otherwise, you won’t be able to access cellular services.

Let’s explore further.

What is PTA Tax in Pakistan?

In Pakistan, the PTA tax refers to the tax imposed by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on mobile phones brought into the country. This tax is mandatory for all imported mobile phones, whether new or used, and applies to phones used for more than 60 days after arrival in Pakistan for permanent citizens.

The tax is designed to ensure that all mobile phones operating on Pakistani networks are legally registered and contribute to the country’s revenue.

Types of PTA Taxes (based on Registration Method):

There are two main types of PTA taxes, depending on the registration method:

  1. Registration via Passport: If the phone is registered within 60 days of arrival in Pakistan using a passport, the tax rates are generally lower and vary based on the phone’s C&F (Cost and Freight) value in US Dollars.
  2. Registration via CNIC (Computerized National Identity Card): If the phone is registered using a CNIC, the tax rates are generally higher than those for passport registration.

PTA Tax Rates:

The PTA tax rates vary depending on the phone’s value and the registration method. The rates can be found on the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) website or the PTA website.

How do I Calculate my PTA tax?

You can use online PTA tax calculators or check the FBR website for the latest tax rates. It’s important to note that the tax amount is usually a combination of fixed rates and ad valorem percentages. You just need to enter your IMEI number to directly find out your tax value on the phone, for instance, iphone 15 Pro Max.
